Kezia was born in Aberdeen and grew up in Elgin, attending Bishopmill Primary School and then Harris Academy in Dundee. In 1999, Kezia returned to the North East to gain an Law LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 2003.

Following her undergraduate degree Kezia then moved to Edinburgh to undertake a postgraduate M.S.c in Public Policy at the University of Edinburgh before then going on to work as a public affairs professional within the higher education sector, firstly for Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) and then with the National Union of Students (NUS) Scotland between 2004 and 2007.

Between 2007 and the 2011 Holyrood elections, Kezia worked in the Scottish Parliament as a Political Adviser to the Rt. Hon. Lord George Foulkes MSP until her own election to the Parliament for the Lothian’s Region on the Scottish Labour Party list.

In the Parliament, Kezia first served as Scottish Labour’s Shadow Minister for Youth Employment and as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning. In December 2014 Kezia won the election for Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party by securing 63% of the vote which included Scottish Labour members, parliamentarians and affiliated organisations.

Kezia served in the post of Deputy Leader until the resignation of Jim Murphy as Scottish Labour Party Leader following the 2015 U.K General Election where she then sought the Party Leadership, winning with 72.1% of the overall vote and becoming Scottish Labour Party Leader on the 15th August 2015. As well as serving as the Scottish Labour Party Leader in the Parliament she also acts as the Scottish Labour Finance Spokesperson and continues to Co-convene the Cross Party Group (CPG) on Children and Young People. 

Kezia Dugdale resigned as Scottish Labour Party Leader on 30 August 2017.

Kezia is a proud member of the trade union movement as well as the Co-Operative Party. Kezia lives in the Portobello area of Edinburgh and is a season ticket holder at Hibernian Football Club.
