  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 02 February 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-02998

That the Parliament celebrates what it sees as an impressive fundraising achievement by members of the Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa community in Shetland; understands that, on the night of 25 January 2022, on what would have been Lerwick’s annual fire festival, members of squad number one, the teachers’ squad, walked a continuous overnight relay for 12 hours, around the Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa halls route, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK Relay for Life Shetland; further understands that these efforts have raised more than £13,000 for CRUK; celebrates the efforts of everyone involved in organising and participating in the fundraising event, and the generosity of the donors; expresses its solidarity with everyone affected by cancer and its support for the work of Cancer Research UK, which turns 20 years old on 4 February 2022; recognises the impact that COVID-19 has had on festivities and community events, like Up-Helly-Aa, and wishes all those involved in the fundraising well.
