St Stephen’s High School Among First to Offer Formal First Aid Qualifications

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 13 January 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-02764

That the Parliament commends St Stephen’s High School in Port Glasgow on being among the first secondary schools in Scotland to offer senior pupils formal first aid qualifications; notes that pupils can now take SCQF level six awards in First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work alongside their other studies; understands that the introduction of first aid into the curriculum has been spearheaded by teacher, Jamie McGowan, who became a trainer in the subject in June 2021; believes that this is an important step in helping equip young people with the knowledge needed for real life situations and that first aid can play a vital role in saving someone’s life; commends Jamie for taking the initiative to launch these courses; understands that he hopes that this will help create a team of community first aiders; believes that these qualifications will be looked upon favourably by employers, and hopes that other schools in the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency, and across the country, will consider offering such courses.
