Michael Shanks Runs All of Glasgow's Streets

  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 10 January 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-02731

That the Parliament congratulates Michael Shanks, a Modern Studies teacher at Park Mains High School in Erskine, on his completion of running every street in the city of Glasgow; notes that he was inspired to do this during the first lockdown in March 2020, initially as a way of exploring new routes in the city during limited exercise periods, and subsequently due to his research of the story of Rickey Gates, who ran every street in San Francisco in 2018; acknowledges that Michael ran 6,143 streets, a distance of almost 1,500 miles, or 2,325 km, which is approximately the same distance from Glasgow to Moscow; further acknowledges his interest in the social history of Glasgow and west Scotland, and his social media posts of notable streets from his runs, including Kennedy Drive in Govan with connections to Mary Barbour and Red Clydeside, as well as his calls for "no ball games" signs to be removed in recognition of them being from a bygone era, and also as a way to encourage young people to play sport; understands that the school community at Park Mains is proud of his achievement, and wishes him well as he prepares to run any new build streets added to the city map, and write a book on the history and modern stories that he found on the streets that he ran.
