  • Submitted by: Alexander Stewart, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 06 January 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-02702

That the Parliament welcomes the news that sportscotland has announced a second round of projects to receive investment from its Cycling Facilities Fund (CFF); understands that the fund supports cycling facility projects that create or improve places where people take part in sport and physical activity; understands that the latest CFF round sees awards to a total of 13 projects, including three awards for projects in the Mid Scotland and Fife region, two of which have been made to Fife Council; notes that these awards to Fife Council constitute one award of £49,466 to part fund the Lochore Meadows Whitewood mountain bike trails project, and another award of £100,000 to part fund the Middleden Mountain Bike trails and skills area project; understands that the Lochore Meadows Whitewood mountain bike trails project is an established destination for enjoying sport and physical activity in the outdoors, and that the addition of new mountain bike trails will provide even more opportunities to participate; further understands that the Middleden project will build on the success of an existing project by extending the current trail and build a floodlit mountain bike skills area, extending the hours that the facility will be available to the local community; considers that all sportscotland awards aim not only to drive participation, but also to allow for progression in sport up to performance level, as demand increases; acknowledges that, in August 2023, Glasgow and Scotland will host the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, which are an historic and innovative event that will bring together 13 existing World Championship cycling disciplines into one enormous event for the first time; believes that, to build towards this event, the ambition for the CFF is to provide accessible community and club facilities that inspire new and existing cyclists to make cycling a sport for life; applauds this significant investment in cycling infrastructure, which is being delivered through a partnership between Scottish Cycling and £4 million of National Lottery funding from sportscotland to ensure that these and similar projects are able to have a lasting impact, and commends sportscotland on its focus towards the health and wellbeing of communities, not only in the Mid Scotland and Fife region, but across Scotland.
