Remembering the Life and Work of bell hooks

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 17 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02583

That the Parliament recognises the life and work of who it considers as the legendary feminist author, Gloria Jean Watkins, better known by her pen name, bell hooks, who sadly passed away on 15 December 2021; sends its condolences to her colleagues and loved ones at this time; notes that her work focused on the intersectionality of race, capitalism, sexuality, and gender, and the production and perpetuation of systems of oppression and class domination; commends the work of this Pulitzer Prize-winning author and social activist, what it sees as her dedication to inclusive, intersectional feminism for the betterment of humanity, her compassion and love, and understands that the more than 40 books that she penned in her lifetime, since her first, entitled Ain’t I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism, published in 1981, have opened the hearts and minds of many across the world.
