Barbados Becomes a Republic

  • Submitted by: Gillian Mackay, Central Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 21 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02557

That the Parliament notes that, on 30 November 2021, Barbados removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, and transitioned to a parliamentary republic; recognises that Barbados has become the world’s newest republic after almost 400 years of rule by the British monarchy; believes that this is a moment to address what it sees as imperial exploitation, and that it is part of a wider, international movement towards decolonization, and considers that people of all nations across the world have a democratic right to determine their own systems of governance.
