OCHRE's 20th Anniversary

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 04 November 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01923

That the Parliament congratulates the oesophageal cancer charity, OCHRE, on its 20th anniversary; commends its ongoing work to raise awareness and improve outcomes for a cancer that it understands is both one of the least survivable and most challenging to diagnose in time for potentially curative treatment; understands that the number of people being diagnosed too late for treatment is likely to rise following the challenges of accessing diagnostic testing during the COVID-19 pandemic; notes what is sees as the low public awareness of the dangers of persistent heartburn and reflux, and the risks associated with self-treatment using over-the-counter remedies; commends the introduction and roll-out of cytosponge testing across Scotland and the research to investigate the higher than average levels of the condition, especially among women; notes the importance of raising awareness among the public of the symptoms, which include persistent heartburn or indigestion, difficulty swallowing, nausea and vomiting, and commends the efforts of OCHRE and all who work tirelessly to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer, and those who raise funds to improve early diagnosis and outcomes.
