  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 06 October 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01537

That the Parliament congratulates Guide Dogs on celebrating 90 years of helping people with sight loss to live the life they choose; notes that the UK’s first guide dog partnerships qualified 90 years ago, in October 1931, when four veterans of the First World War were matched with their German Shepherds; acknowledges the pioneering achievement of Muriel Crooke and Rosamund Bond, who organised the training of the first four British guide dogs from a garage in Wallasey, Merseyside; understands that, in the years that followed, Guide Dogs has helped to transform the lives of 36,000 people across the UK, through a range of services, and that it is the world’s largest breeder and trainer of working dogs; recognises that Guide Dogs opened its Forfar guide dog training centre in 1965 and that, with centres in Hamilton and Edinburgh, Guide Dogs continues to make a life-changing difference to people with sight loss in Scotland, and commends all guide dog volunteers and supporters in communities across Scotland and the UK on their invaluable work.
