  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 13 September 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01160

That the Parliament congratulates Michael O’Connor MBE on being named honorary president of the Greenock and District Sea Cadets; notes that the 81-year-old former Lieutenant Commander has held several posts, including chairman, having joined the unit as a young boy in 1953 after being caught stealing to feed himself, following which his probationary officer made him join a uniformed organisation; understands that Michael hails this as a turning point in his life and that he went on to work as a shipwright at Scott Lithgow and enjoyed a stint in the Merchant Navy; recognises that upon rising through the ranks in the Sea Cadets, Michael was rewarded with an MBE in 1995 and he received the Sea Cadet Medal in 2011; acknowledges that Michael’s love of the sea took him all over the world to places including Japan, America and Canada, and as well as his dedication to Greenock and District Sea Cadet Corps, Michael has helped hundreds of foreign sailors through the seafarers’ charity, Stella Maris; believes that Michael’s story highlights how the Sea Cadets can be a lifeline for some young people, and that it’s a great way to learn new skills and make new friends; expresses thanks to all those involved in Greenock and District Sea Cadets, and hopes Michael’s story encourages other young people to consider joining the unit.
