Our Isles & Oceans

  • Submitted by: Craig Hoy, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 12 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00843

That the Parliament notes the excellent work of Our Isles & Oceans, an organisation that aims to use the powerful factors of business and sport to bring about youth opportunity and professional development for 18- to 35-year-olds who have been badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that the cornerstone of the project is a partnership with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, allowing a 68ft training yacht to be based out of Oban for a number of weeks each year from 2021-2023; further understands that individuals will be trained by a clipper race skipper and two mates, will experience what it is like to sail on the open seas along the west coast of Scotland, building teamwork and resilience skills, will gain a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Start Yachting and Clipper Race training certificate at the end of the week, and will enter the Our Isles & Oceans club, where they will be mentored into sustainable livelihoods; believes that applicants will then be able to take part in the 2023-24 Round the World Clipper Yacht Race, and that Our Isles & Oceans will be the only Scotland-based British yacht in the race, and extends congratulations to all those taking part over the coming three years and thanks to the founders and organisers David Stewart Howitt and Anthony Stodart.
