Sir Walter Scott Minted

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 26 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00749

That the Parliament notes the launch of a Royal Mint commemorative coin in honour of the 250th anniversary of Sir Walter Scott’s birth; understands that the coin has been designed by the textual artist, Stephen Raw, who was inspired by a visit to the Abbotsford Estate, Sir Walter Scott’s famous home in the Scottish Borders, and was created in collaboration with The Abbotsford Trust and Matthew Maxwell Scott, who is both a Trustee and a direct descendant of Scott; hopes that this launch will encourage people to visit Abbotsford, a renowned visitor attraction, to learn more; understands that The Abbotsford Trust is marking this anniversary in a number of ways throughout 2021, and believes that this coin will further publicise Sir Walter Scott’s life and legacy to a wider audience.
