  • Submitted by: Rona Mackay, Strathkelvin and Bearsden, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 23 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00743

That the Parliament mourns the sad passing, but celebrates the life and achievements, of Charlie Gallagher; notes that Charlie, a resident in the Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency, was a former football player for Celtic FC and Dumbarton; further notes Charlie's sporting successes, appearing 171 times for Celtic and 95 times for Dumbarton, winning multiple trophies, including the European Cup, Scottish Cup, League Cup and Scottish League multiple times with Celtic; celebrates Charlie as an important member of Celtic’s Lisbon Lions squad, which was the first UK club to win the European Cup, after defeating Inter Milan on 25 May 1967; highlights that Charlie was the first Scottish-born player to represent the Republic of Ireland in international football, paving the way for later generations of Scots-born Irish footballers; warmly recalls the strength of esteem Charlie was held in by the local community and throughout the football world, and sends the deepest condolences to Charlie’s family at this sad and difficult time.
