Recognising Long-standing Duo's Service to Orkney Coastguards

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 14 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00678

That the Parliament congratulates Willie Neish and William (Bill) Laurenson on their recent retirements from the Orkney Coastguard after more than 40 years' distinguished service to maritime safety in the islands; understands that Willie has served 47 years as a Coastal Rescue Officer for the Kirkwall-based team, and Bill has served 44 years with the Stromness-based team; recognises the sacrifices made over that time, including Willie interrupting his wedding day to attend an incident; acknowledges the immense local knowledge that both Willie and Bill have, and which has benefited the service, not least in supporting and mentoring new recruits over the years, and wishes both Willie and Bill a long, happy and well-earned retirement.
