Shambellie House Trust

  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 07 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00612

That the Parliament congratulates the Shambellie House Trust on taking ownership of Scotland's former National Museum of Costume from the Scottish Government on 5 July 2021; notes that Shambellie House was built in 1860 and was the home for the Stewart family until 1977, when it was handed over to the National Museum of Scotland; understands that it became the National Museum for Costume in 1982 but that, sadly, this closed in 2013; commends the actions of Gordon Mann, Chair of the Trust, and all of the Trust's members; notes that it was established in 2015 after community campaigns had been unsuccessful in keeping the House open; applauds the exciting vision of the Trust for its project that will aim to support Dumfries and Galloway’s creative and nature-based industries by displaying and selling their works, attracting high-spending visitors, bringing valuable trading opportunities for creative businesses, creating a number of new jobs, promoting the area’s culture and environment and delivering curriculum development training for tutors, which will offer educational experiences for young people; notes that it is hoped a range of courses will be delivered by artists, makers and photographers by January 2022, and wishes the Shambellie House Trust and all involved with it a very successful future.
