Shetland Firefighters Raise Money for the Fire Fighters Charity

  • Submitted by: Beatrice Wishart, Shetland Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 07 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00609

That the Parliament congratulates James Tulloch and Ewan Anderson, who are firefighters from Shetland, for walking the length of Shetland, traversing the 190 miles from Unst to Fair Isle, in order to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity; understands that participants wore 20kg of breathing apparatus and visited each of the 14 Shetland fire stations and some schools along the way; commends the other fundraisers who turned out in support, including members of the ambulance, police, coastguard and lifeboat services; further commends the work of The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides lifelong support for fire services personnel from across the UK and their families, empowering individuals to achieve mental, physical, and social wellbeing throughout their lives, including those who are retired, all those for whom fighting fire is or has been a part of their role, including UK armed forces' firefighters and dependants; further understands The Fire Fighter Charity was the first organisation to offer a dedicated COVID-19 Recovery Programme for the people it serves, including a residential programme designed to support those recovering from the impact of the virus on their health and wellbeing, provide online living well groups, its piloting of an online mental health course and its plan to run a three-month programme with a focus on healthy joints from September 2021, and notes the challenge of fundraising for The Fire Fighters Charity during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required the cancellation of all face-to-face fundraising events and challenges, where the charity normally aims to raise £10 million to fund its service provision each year.
