Teacher Recruitment

  • Submitted by: Willie Rennie, North East Fife, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 02 July 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00576

That the Parliament condemns the actions of the Scottish Government and Fife Council, which have reportedly resulted in many trained teachers in Fife, including newly-qualified teachers, being left without a job this August, despite successfully passing through the interview process; considers that those actions will have a detrimental impact on the lives and livelihoods of many trained teachers, deter future trainee teachers and that similar situations have created uncertainty for thousands of newly qualified teachers, experienced teachers and nursery teachers across Scotland; understands that a petition, which has been created for residents of North East Fife and calls on the Scottish Government and Fife Council to create more permanent teaching posts to end the prospect of high teacher unemployment, has garnered the support of almost 1000 people already; further understands that many teachers have come forward to support the campaign, and that there are calls for decisive action to create more teaching posts to end the prospect of high teacher unemployment, the casualisation of the teaching workforce and ensure that pupils benefit from the talents of everyone in education.
