Capercaillie Population Dips Below 1,000

That the Parliament notes with concern recent reports of a sharp decline in Scotland’s capercaillie population; understands that Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) has said it will not reach its target of increasing the population of the bird to 1,200; recognises that the CNPA recently estimated that there are currently around 700 of the species in the park; acknowledges that a fuller picture of the population will be available in the winter; further notes that the CNPA believes that a loss of habitat and disturbance by humans has contributed to the population decline; believes that the plight of the capercaillie is part of a wider ongoing nature emergency, and urges the Scottish Government to take swift action to tackle the decline of this iconic Highland species.
