Professor Catherine Heymans appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland

  • Submitted by: Sarah Boyack, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 May 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00163

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Catherine Heymans on her appointment as Astronomer Royal for Scotland; notes that she is the first woman to be appointed to this role in its almost 200-year history; recognises Professor Heymans' important work, shedding light on dark energy; notes that her stated goals are to install telescopes in all of Scotland’s remote outdoor learning centres, to advance amateur and professional astronomy in Scotland, and to promote Scotland internationally as a world-leading centre for science; hopes that Professor Heymans will inspire more women and young people to pursue science, and wishes her well in her new role.
