International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia 2021

  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 17 May 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00028

That the Parliament recognises the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT); notes that it was founded 2004, is marked each year on 17 May and aims to raise awareness of violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in order to drive positive change; notes that IDAHOBIT is celebrated in more than 130 countries; believes that it reminds everyone that there is still a long way to go until all LGBTQ+ people are free and safe from harm; acknowledges that reports from Stonewall Scotland suggest that one-in-five LGBTQ+ people have experienced a hate crime and that, often, these go unreported due to concerns that they will not be taken seriously by the authorities; recognises that, in many countries, LGBTQ+ people still live in fear for their livelihoods, families and lives, and acknowledges the need for an ongoing commitment to make positive change and advance the rights of LGBTQ+ people in Scotland and around the world.
