World Water Day

  • Submitted by: Claudia Beamish, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 22 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24443

That the Parliament welcomes World Water Day on 22 March 2021; understands that an alarming 2.2 billion people globally still do not have access to safe water; considers that climate change is exacerbating the problem of access to water globally, and that those who have done the least to cause this crisis are suffering its effects first and most; believes that action on climate change is vital to delivering this basic right to millions of people globally; notes what it considers the importance of the requirement in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2019 for supporting action, including by the sharing of expertise and technology, in developing countries to adapt to and mitigate climate change; acknowledges the efforts of organisations here and in the Global South working towards adaptation for communities on the frontline of climate change; welcomes the work of WaterAid in aiming to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere by 2030, and acknowledges the organisation's new report, Turn the Tide, which notes that COP26 must urgently deliver more progress for the world's poorest people to help adapt to the impacts of climate change.
