Council of Europe Investigation into the Murder of Patrick Finucane

  • Submitted by: John Finnie, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 17 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24387

That the Parliament welcomes reports of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers’ decision to reopen its scrutiny of the UK Government’s decision not to order a public inquiry into the 1989 murder of Patrick Finucane in Belfast; believes that the UK Government has repeatedly refused to properly investigate the killing; understands that, in February 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that investigations into Mr Finucane’s murder were ineffective and fell short of international human rights standards; further understands that, despite that ruling, the UK Government once again decided not to conduct an inquiry in November 2020; believes that the intransigence that it considers the UK Government has demonstrated in this matter represents a gross injustice, and supports Mr Finucane’s family in their quest for answers and accountability.
