80th Anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz

  • Submitted by: Pauline McNeill, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 10 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24332

That the Parliament notes that 2021 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz, which took the lives of 1,200 people, including 39 people when a landmine, or parachute bomb, hit Bankhead Primary School in Knightswood; understands that the school was being used as a civil defence station, a combined fire station and first-aid post, during the Second World War; remembers those who lost their lives on the 13 March 1941, and those survivors who worked to rebuild the school and community after such tragedy; commends the work of Bankhead Primary School and local people for ensuring that this piece of history is never forgotten; notes that on the 9 March 2021, Neil McLintock, whose father David was a messenger boy at the school and a survivor of the bombing, joined with teachers, pupils and local councillors in a socially-distanced manner to plant a tree in the schools grounds to mark the 80th Anniversary of the tragedy, and understands that the oak tree is a symbol of strength, protection, resilience and solidity and links with the efforts of the community both in World War II, and during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
