New Rector of the University of Edinburgh, Debora Kayembe

That the Parliament congratulates Debora Kayembe, who is a human rights lawyer and activist from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, on being elected as the Rector of the University of Edinburgh; understands that Debora is the first black person and the third woman to hold this position, which is elected every three years by the students and staff; recognises that, in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, she launched the Freedom Walk campaign, which is a civil rights movement that aims to promote social reforms, racial justice and community harmony in Scotland; acknowledges that Debora has served on the Scottish Refugee Council and is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; understands that in her role as Rector, she plans to focus her agenda on combating racism, promoting diversity and ending inequalities in access to higher education; commends Debora on this achievement, and wishes her all the best in her role as Rector and with her other activities.
