  • Submitted by: Gail Ross, Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 02 March 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24281

That the Parliament commends the research being undertaken by the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in assessing offshore renewable energy sites with drones; understands that the 12 month research project is being led by UHI's Environmental Research Institute in Thurso; notes that the project will measure the flow speed and movement of water in the Pentland Firth by using drones which will give the researchers insight into the optimal places to put floating turbines or underwater tidal stream turbines; further notes that the use of drones allow for cost-effective and environmentally-friendly ways to conduct the research which will enrich the development of clean energy, and recognises that the project is collaborating with Swansea University and Bangor University as they utilise similar methods in the Ramsey Sound in Wales.
