World Leprosy Day 2021

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 29 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24007

That the Parliament acknowledges that 31 January 2021 is World Leprosy Day; understands that the date was chosen to be the last Sunday in January to coincide with the date of Mahatma Ghandi’s death in 1948, who sought to challenge the stigma of leprosy; further understands that the day seeks to raise awareness of the disease, which is often and incorrectly labelled as extinct and, as a result, its victims can be left forgotten; notes with concern that an estimated 600 people per day are diagnosed with leprosy across the world, with millions more going undiagnosed; recognises the significant outreach work of Leprosy Mission Scotland, which helps people around the world who have leprosy, and supports its mission to eradicate the disease.
