Concern for Healthy Life Expectancy in Glasgow

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 29 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-24003

That the Parliament notes with great concern recently released statistics from the National Records of Scotland showing differences in healthy life expectancy across Scotland; understands that Glasgow has the lowest average healthy life expectancy in Scotland, with a figure of 54.6 years for males; further notes with concern that in the 10% most deprived areas in Glasgow, this figure falls to 47 years; believes that there is no panacea to improving the healthy life expectancy of Glasgow residents, however, key issues around universal credit, drugs and the state of housing in the city must be tackled to improve it, and believes that this requires coordinated efforts from the UK and Scottish governments and the local authority.
