  • Submitted by: Johann Lamont, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 December 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23653

That the Parliament expresses its sadness at the death of Maria Fyfe; sends its sincere condolences to Maria’s family, in particular her two sons, Stephen and Chris, and four grandchildren; pays tribute to her exceptional service as an educator, campaigner and MP for her home city of Glasgow; understands that Maria graduated from University of Strathclyde with a degree in economic history and lectured in trade union studies at the Central College of Commerce; further understands that Maria was elected to Glasgow City Council in 1980 and, at the 1987 General Election, was elected as the only female Labour MP in a 50-strong group becoming, at the time, only the tenth-ever female Labour MP from Scotland; acknowledges Maria’s commitment to devolution and the establishment of a Scottish Parliament through her significant work in the Scottish Constitutional Convention and working groups; highlights her tireless work to improve women’s representation and rights, noting in particular her work around the 50-50 campaign to ensure that the Scottish Parliament had equal representation at its core; notes that, following her retirement from elected office in 2001, Maria continued to champion the causes of fairness and equality and served as Chair of the Remember Mary Barbour Association, successfully spearheading the campaign and fundraising to have a statue of the pioneer and fair rents campaigner, Mary Barbour, in Govan, and believes that Maria will be fondly remembered for her fairness, tenacity, kindness and unswerving commitment to a better world.
