Treatment of Glasgow Hospitality Workers by Ivy Glasgow and WEST Brewery

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 22 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23114

That the Parliament notes with concern reports from Unite the Union of the refusal by Ivy Glasgow to re-furlough employees for the 16-day lockdown of pubs, bars and restaurants; understands that employees are being temporarily laid off and/or are being offered £150 to compensate for lost wages; further understands that WEST Brewery was refusing to re-furlough staff and believes that it reversed its decision as a result of pressure by a Channel 4 news report and Unite the Union; considers that hospitality workers have already suffered severe income loss and employment uncertainty and therefore deserve to receive all the financial support for which they are eligible; considers that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the extent to which poor treatment of workers is endemic in hospitality; believes that the Scottish and UK governments should take further action to ensure that workers receive all available income support, given that the extension of COVID restrictions will continue beyond the end of the Job Retention Scheme, and urges the Scottish Government to develop a hospitality-specific plan for ending the unfair treatment of workers, including tackling low pay and working conditions.
