  • Submitted by: Willie Rennie, North East Fife, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 20 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23030

That the Parliament congratulates Ryan Wilson, who is a student at the University of St Andrews, on being named the Young Software Engineer of the Year at the ScotlandIS CmdR ScotSoft 2020 conference; recognises Ryan’s work in developing a tool that helps check a parallel programme for flaws when running on a system with so-called weak memory consistency; congratulates runners-up, Daniella Ivanova, from University of Glasgow, on her AI deep-learning programme, Konrad Dryja, from the University of Aberdeen, on developing a decentralised blockchain authentication framework, and Craig Pirie, from Robert Gordon University, who won the Best Engineering Project award for his project on using AI vision to identify corrosion in underwater images for inspection engineering applications; understands that all of the programmes are applicable in the real world and will bring tangible benefits to many industries in the future; believes that these awards reflect the outstanding software skills in Scotland’s universities, and wishes all of the entrants to this year’s awards a prosperous future.
