COAST Receive New Boat to Help Protect the Marine Environment

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 15 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07248

That the Parliament congratulates COAST (the Community of Arran Seabed Trust) on recently taking delivery of a new custom-designed boat, the COAST Explorer; notes that the boat will form a central part of COAST’s vision to expand and develop its scientific research and monitoring projects, citizen science outreach opportunities and marine education programme; understands that the boat was designed with a diverse range of activities in mind, with a fully customizable and wheelchair-accessible deck, which can be adapted to either fit enough seats for its 12 passenger capacity, a wet laboratory table or a completely clear deck, depending on the needs of the research or outreach project, as well as the ability to lower remotely operated vehicles, tow plankton nets and drop down hydrophones or other scientific equipment, opening up a world of opportunities to allow people to experience the seabed; further understands that the project has been funded by the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund, as well as Fauna and Flora International Arcadia and Blue Marine Foundation; hopes that the boat will help COAST continue its ground-breaking work in protecting the marine environment around Arran and engaging the local community in this work, and wishes everyone involved well for their future activities.
