Scottish SPCA Pet Aid Campaign

  • Submitted by: Jackie Dunbar, Aberdeen Donside, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 05 October 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06182

That the Parliament recognises the Scottish SPCA for its response to the difficult situation they and pet owners face in light of the cost of living crisis; further recognises that across Aberdeen in the first half of 2022, the Scottish SPCA rehomed 275 animals, responded to 180 total incidents and took in 125 animals resulting from court cases; understands that, recently, calls to give up animals have trebled as thousands of owners struggle to cover the cost of the essentials for themselves and their pets; notes that, in response to the cost of living crisis, the Scottish SPCA launched its campaign, Pet Aid, where it provides essential pet food to food banks across Scotland to prevent owners being separated from their pets due to a lack of funds and avoid the associated emotional distress to both pet and owner, and commends the Scottish SPCA for all its work in dealing with the consequences of the cost of living crisis and taking the initiative to mitigate further distress to owners and pets.
