  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 27 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06058

That the Parliament celebrates the 20th anniversary of River City and congratulates cast, crew and all those working behind the scenes on the Scottish soap on reaching this significant milestone; notes that the first episode, which featured the wedding of Eileen and Tommy Donachie, aired on BBC One Scotland on 24 September 2002 and, since then, over 1,200 episodes have been broadcast by the BBC; acknowledges that it is filmed in Dumbarton at BBC Scotland’s Lomondgate studios; believes that it has provided a catalyst for development of the area, which has seen housing, hospitality and business expansion there over the last 20 years, contributing, it understands, at least £300 million to the area’s economy, as well as hundreds of jobs and about £100 million of private sector investment; considers that the film industry plays a major role in the creative sector in Scotland; believes that River City has provided job opportunities for local people, as well as cameo roles for up-and-coming actors from the West Dunbartonshire area, such as Gayle Telfer-Stevens from Renton who has played Caitlin McLean in the soap since 2016, and wishes River City every success in the years to come.
