Supporting Loss and Damage Action Day

  • Submitted by: Maggie Chapman, North East Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 20 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05936

That the Parliament supports Loss and Damage Action Day on Thursday 22 September 2022, which highlights what it sees as the urgent need to address those impacts of human-caused climate change that are not prevented by mitigation or adaptation activities; considers that those most acutely affected by these impacts are those who have contributed the least to the climate crisis; believes that this is a fundamental and grave injustice, compounded by histories of colonialism and oppression; acknowledges what it sees as the responsibility of the minority world, the Global North, to provide appropriate redress for climate harms suffered by the majority world, the Global South; welcomes the Scottish Government pledge, made at COP26, to commit £2 million to loss and damage through its Climate Justice Fund; further welcomes the Scottish Government's partnership with the Climate Justice Resilience Fund to programme £1 million of this commitment, and looks forward to receiving further updates regarding the programmes which will deliver this work, and the continuation of Scotland’s role in urging UK and global action on what it considers a critical issue.
