International Literacy Day

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 20 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05923

That the Parliament recognises that 8 September 2022 was UNESCO’s International Literacy Day; acknowledges that since 1967 the day has been marked annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society; understands, however, that despite progress having been made, literacy challenges persist, with at least 771 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today; regrets that in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic it is reported that nearly 24 million learners might never return to formal education, out of which, 11 million are projected to be girls and young women; thanks UNESCO for its advocacy on this subject, and hopes that progress can continue to be made across the world.
