Dunnikier Park Community Golf Club's Mental Health Awareness Week Initiative

  • Submitted by: Claire Baker, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04825

That the Parliament congratulates Dunnikier Park Community Golf Club, based in Kirkcaldy in Fife, on the success of its Mental Health Awareness Week initiative; understands that the club marked Mental Health Awareness Week with a series of taster sessions of Park Golf, a game played with one club over a short course; notes that, after the club learnt of its popularity in Japan and America, the organisation thought it would be appropriate to name the game "Park Gowf", with its "hame" at the six-hole 2019 course at Dunnikier Park; recognises that Mental Health Awareness Week highlighted the issue of loneliness and acknowledges that the golf club offered taster sessions of "Park Gowf", aiming to demonstrate how the simple game can bring people together while providing the opportunity to meet others in the fresh air; appreciates that a number of local organisations were involved, including Alzheimer Scotland, Active Fife, Nourish Family Support Centre, the Salvation Army and Sporting Memories, and, in addition, Fife Chamber of Commerce; believes that, in total, around 100 people attended the various free sessions led by volunteers; applauds that Alzheimer Scotland is now taking part in established sessions of "Park Gowf" on a regular basis and believes that its service users are socialising and taking part in activity, benefitting their physical and mental health and wellbeing; recognises that it is expected that other organisations in the area will soon be joining the scheme; appreciates the success of the initiative and expresses its gratitude to the organisation and its volunteers for their hard work and contributions to helping those in the community, and extends its very best wishes to the club for its continued success of the initiative in the future.
