LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2022

  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 10 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04739

That the Parliament recognises June 2022 as Pride Month; acknowledges what it sees as the continued importance of Pride in eradicating discrimination against, and achieving equality for, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people; understands that Pride Month is celebrated internationally annually in June to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots, and aims to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for LGBTQ+ people worldwide; considers that the COVID-19 restrictions resulting from the pandemic over the last two years significantly altered traditional celebration plans, but that it is welcome that, in 2022, large-scale events to mark Pride Month are again taking place across what it sees as Scotland’s inclusive and diverse communities, including in Dumfries, where a wide programme of events is scheduled to take place to mark Pride, including LGBTQ+ film screenings at the Loreburne Hall and various events at the Stove Network; believes that these provide an invaluable opportunity for LGBTQ+ people to socialise and get together; welcomes the progress that it believes has been made in Scotland to advance LGBTQ+ equality, such as the introduction of LGBTQ+ inclusive education in the Scottish curriculum; sends what it sees as a resounding and strong message to all that Scotland accepts, supports and promotes the rights of all, regardless of background, to be who they want to be, and promotes diversity and difference; thanks the many organisations who support, and advocate for, LGBTQ+ people in Scotland, including LGBT Youth Scotland, Stonewall Scotland, the Equality Network and the Trans Alliance, and wishes all a very happy LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2022.
