  • Submitted by: Willie Rennie, North East Fife, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 03 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02417

That the Parliament denounces what it sees as the wrongful detention of, and violence towards, political activists and journalists by what it considers to be the authoritarian state in Belarus; believes there to be 833 political prisoners in Belarus; condemns reports of prisoners facing extreme violence and torture; supports the work of Libereco - Partnership for Human Rights, in raising awareness of the plight of what it considers as political prisoners in Belarus; welcomes the reported decision by elected representatives across the UK and Europe to act as "godparents" to what are considered to be Belarusian political prisoners; encourages MSPs from all parties to take up the invitation to adopt a political prisoner believed to be wrongfully detained by the Belarusian state; urges the government of Belarus to put a stop to further violence and to respect the fundamental human rights of the Belarusian people; believes that the international community has a duty to put pressure on the Belarusian state to prevent what it considers as further abuses of human rights, and stands in solidarity with the Belarusian people, and their right to peaceful political protest and freedom of the press.
