For the purpose of producing statistics on causes of death, deaths registered in Scotland are classified using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). The most relevant category in this classification is code L89 (decubitus ulcer) which is assigned when the death certificate refers to bedsores, plaster ulcers and pressure ulcers.

The tables give figures for 2010 as well as for 2011, because the figures for 2010 that appear in the second table were not provided when a similar question in respect of deaths in 2010 (S4W-03698) was answered on 9 November 2011. This was due to a misunderstanding, within the National Records of Scotland (NRS), that was identified only when NRS began to produce the figures to answer this question. NRS apologises for the error.

The following table shows information on the number of patients admitted to hospital where anaphylactic shock was a contributory factor due to the adverse effects of a prescribed drug or medicine properly administered. The diagnostic coding employed on national returns are not detailed enough to distinguish anaphylactic shock due to an adverse reaction to (a) drugs from that due to (b) medicines

The following table shows the latest figures for the number of discharges from mental health hospitals (SMR04) that have a subsequent readmission to a mental health hospital within 28 days.

The information requested is given in the table below. The following table gives the numbers of deaths for which anaphylactic shock was recorded as being a contributory factor to the death¹.

1. The National Records of Scotland (NRS) categorises the causes of each death registered in Scotland using the codes which are given in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10). A death may have a number of causes. Normally, deaths are counted on the basis of the underlying cause of death (that is the disease or injury which initiated the chain of morbid events leading directly to death, or the accident or act which produced the fatal injury). However, the ICD rules do not allow anaphylactic shock (or various other consequences of certain other causes of death) to be counted as the underlying cause of death. Therefore, the table gives the numbers of deaths for which anaphylactic shock was recorded as being a contributory factor to the death.

The available information is given in the following table. Whilst information is held on persons sentenced to a community payback order, this cannot be linked to directly to those also receiving a requirement to carry out a drug programme.

The Criminal History System, from which these data are derived, contains an offence modifier code for a crime or offence which provides additional information for the specific incident as opposed to the actual charge. This code has been used here to identify the type of drug involved in drugs possession offences, however it should be noted that only around half the records on the CHS for drugs offences contain details of the drug(s) involved.

Information for 2011-12 will not be available until publication of the Criminal Proceedings in Scotland, 2011-12 Statistical Bulletin. This is due to be published in November 2012.

The following table illustrates the total number of prisoner on prisoner assaults and prisoner on staff assaults broken down by Establishment. Included are serious, minor and non injury assaults. The data is as of 25 June 2012.
