PE01609: NHS Scotland Treatments

Petitioner: Robert Marks

Date Lodged: 13 July 2016

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to refuse treatment to patients of NHS Scotland for illnesses and conditions that are solely or mainly self inflicted through their refusal to follow scientifically proven medical advice, especially when that refusal has been continued for a considerable period, and for the financial savings to be allocated to other areas of NHS Scotland to aid those suffering through no fault of their own.

Petition History:

15 September 2016: The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government. Link to Official Report 15 September 2016

24 November 2016: The Committe agreed to close the petition under rule 15.7 of Standing Orders on the basis that current healthcare policy is aimed at prevention and early intervention and that the Scottish Government has set out its view of the most cost-effective and ethical way to treat illnesses. Link to Official Report 24 November 2016

Written Submissions:

I guess this will offend many people. If you are offended, I would offer you the opportunity to pay ADDITIONAL tax that you yourself would set and could hypothecate to any aspect of self-inflicted illness that you chose.

This is not a masked tax cutting proposal. I would force everyone to pay a full and proportionate share of income to fund an NHS that offers the best treatment humanly attainable, free at the point of delivery and based on real need.

Lenin: Protect a people from the result of their own folly and you create a nation of fools.

, this idea seems to be quite rational, it also might not be as compassionate towards the mentally ill as the medical profession may wish to be.For example, some people die or get a mental illness as a result of medical intervention, and being mis diagnosed, mis-prescribed, over-medicated with harmful drugs, or as a result of other medical mistakes ( the so-called "iatrogenic illness") People may go to hospital for a minor surgery, which is botched and then requite heavy pain killers, and develop a dependency on pain killing drugs or substitute such as alcohol. Should people who are thus addicted to alcohol be refused a liver transplant? Also, some people self-medicate for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia with nicotine from cigarettes. Both nicotine and alcohol are carninogens that contribute to much disease and early death. Should smokers and drinkers all be refused medical treatment, or should they just help to pay for it from higher taxes on their drugs of choice?
