Date Lodged: 18 December 2014

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to increase the maximum sentence for those convicted under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Petition History:

The petitioner has also collected an additional 562 signatures.

17 February 2015: The Committee took evidence from Olivia Robertson. The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government and the Scottish SPCA. Link to Official Report 17 February 2015

28 April 2015: The Committee agreed to close the petition, under Rule 15.7, on the basis that the penalties in place under the Act are reviewed periodically, existing maximum penalties have not been used by the courts and there is little support for an increase at this time. Written Submissions:

What actions do you think should be taken to tackle the problem of animal cruelty?

What do you think the maximum sentence should be for those convicted under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006?

Do you agree that animal abuse is a sign of emotional disturbance?

I concur

The punishment for disgraceful acts like this must be increased to fit the crime. 3 or 4 years for malicious acts of cruelty.

Just because animals can't talk doesn't give anyone the right to treat with any kind of cruelty.

1. Educate children. 2. Depending on severity of offence 5 years in jail. 3. Not emotional disturbance, a deeper malaise than that. Psychotic maybe.
