Attending parliamentary business

The public gallery of the Debating Chamber has wheelchair spaces. All committee rooms are fully accessible for wheelchair users, and spaces are reserved for wheelchair users in the public seating area in each committee room.

Evacuation

If you are booking a guided tour or tickets for a debate please inform Visitor Services if you will require assistance in the event of an evacuation.

Parking

A small number of public parking spaces are reserved for disabled people on Horse Wynd. 

Please note that these parking bays are for visitors to the Holyrood area in general, not just for visitors to the Parliament. These parking bays are owned and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council and can be used by all blue badge holders. There is, therefore, no guarantee that a space will be available You may wish to contact the City of Edinburgh Council for further information about these spaces.

Parking for people with a disabled person’s parking permit is permitted on single yellow lines and these are available near to the Parliament building.

Pick up and drop off points for visitors with mobility access needs

If you require to be dropped off or collected when visiting the Scottish Parliament you can use the turning circle at Dynamic Earth. It may be possible to use the parking bays on Horse Wynd as a drop off and pick up point, but waiting in the bays is not permitted and the usage of the bays for this purpose is subject to their availability. These parking bays are owned and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council and can be used by all blue badge holders. Public transport and taxis

Lothian Buses 6 and 300 go to the Scottish Parliament. Both these buses have low floors to make it easier to get on and off.  There is a taxi rank outside the Scottish Parliament building, on the corner of Horse Wynd. Staff at the Visitor Information Desk can help you organise a taxi.

Stairs and lifts

Stairs in the building have a handrail at each side, but some landings have no handrails.

 

There are 

  • 61 steps (split by 5 landings) in the staircase from the Main Hall to the public gallery of the Debating Chamber

  • 9 steps in the staircase to the Garden Lobby
  • 28 steps (split by 1 landing) in the staircase from the Garden Lobby to the Members’ Lobby.

However, lifts are available to access all areas of the building visitors may need to reach.

Toilets

There are accessible toilets in several parts of the building including the entrance area, near the way out and near the stairs to the Debating Chamber. There is also a Changing Places toilet with a hoist and changing bench. Staff will show you where this is.

Tours

Guided tours normally last around an hour and cover a considerable area of the Parliament building. However, Visitor Services staff will be happy to take you on the route that is best suited to you and folding chairs are available to use on guided tours. Please let Visitor Services know what you need when you book.

 

Wheelchairs

The building is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs and mobility scooters.You can borrow a manual wheelchair from the Visitor Information Desk (subject to availability) to use when you are at the Scottish Parliament. Contact Visitor Services in advance if you want to make sure a wheelchair is available on your visit.
