The stated policy objective of the Bill is to provide a modern, comprehensive legislative framework for burial and cremation in Scotland.

The Committee published its Stage 1 Report on the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Bill on 4 February 2016.

The Scottish Government provided a response on 11 February.
The Local Government and Regeneration Committee published its Stage 1 Report on the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Bill on 1 February 2016.

Stage 2 of the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Bill is was completed by the Health and Sport Committee on 8 March. The Local Government and Regeneration Committee carried out Stage 2 consideration of the Bill on 9 March.
Stage 3 of the Bill was completed on Tuesday 22 March.

On 20 October the Committee launched a call for written views which closed on 4 December 2015.

At its meeting on 10 November 2015, the Committee agreed its approach.
The Committee took evidence at its meetings on 5 and 12 January 2016.
Work By Other Committees
The Health and Sport Committee is the lead committee on the Bill and is considering the general principles at Stage 1, as well as sections 50-55 which relate to losses during pregnancy. The Local Government and Regeneration Committee was designated secondary committee and will consider all other parts of the Bill.
