About the Inquiry

The Justice Committee held a round-table evidence session on demand-led policing: service of first and last resort on Tuesday 24 January 2017. The evidence session focused on the breadth and type of non-criminal work that the police service deals with, with a particular focus on how the police help vulnerable people, the skill-sets and resources the police service have in relation to this work, and the police service’s working relationship with other public bodies and third sector organisations working in this field.

Following the round-table evidence session, NHS boards were asked to provide information about out-of-hours provision by of mental health officers in accident and emergency wards. Local authorities were also asked to provide information about out-of-hours provision of social work services for people who might also require the assistance of the police and facilities to enable them to recover from the use of alcohol and drugs.
