Background

The Committee took evidence from the Scottish Funding Council on 16 November 2016.

As a result of the evidence heard at this session, the Committee agreed to invite the Scottish Government to give evidence on the impact of the recommendation in the Enterprise and Skills Review on creating a new board and its impact on the Scottish Funding Council.

The Committee heard from the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work at its meeting on 7 December 2016.

Correspondence

Following the meeting on 7 December, the Committee wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for clarification on the evidence base for the abolition of the Scottish Funding Council board.  In advance of the Committee's letter issuing, the Cabinet Secretary wrote to the Committee offering background on evidence received by the Review.  The Committee wrote seeking further clarification on the evidence base following this letter.

Universities Scotland wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work following the evidence session on 7 December 2016.

The Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work wrote to the Committee on 23 February 2017 highlighting the publication of a paper by Lorne Crerar on the “Proposals on Governance and the Creation of a Strategic Board”.

The Committee held a Chamber debate on the performance and role of a number of bodies in the New Year, on the afternoon of 12 January 2017.
