The Committee received correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform on 4 July 2016 on the consultation on 10 proposed Special Protection Areas in Scotland's marine environment. The proposals concern the role of the marine environment for wild birds.
On 22 August, the Committee received correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform on the launch of consultations on the Small Isles Marine Conservation Order and the designation of the Small Isles and Fetlar to Haroldswick Marine Protected Areas.
On 6 March 2017 the Committee received correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform providing an update on Marine Protected Areas from previous correspondence received on 5 February 2016 by the then Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment.
On 18 May 2017, the Cabinet Secretary wrote to the Committee updating it on urgent subordinate legislation being introduced to enhance environmental protection at Loch Carron:

On 16 November 2017, the Committee received correspondence from the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee on the marine licensing provisions of the Islands (Scotland) Bill .
On 21 April 2018 the Committee received a letter from WWF Scotland regarding the Committee's future work on scrutinising the Scottish Government’s recent review of the National Marine Plan.
On 26 June 2018 the Committee wrote to Scottish Environment LINK, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Marine Conservation Society and RSPB Scotland regarding the National Marine Plan.
