Launch of Going Further for Student Carers

  • Submitted by: Tom Arthur, Renfrewshire South, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 13 March 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-16322

That the Parliament acknowledges the launch of the Going Further for Student Carers Recognition Award, which is an event hosted by Carers Trust Scotland that will take place on 14 March 2019 at the City of Glasgow College; welcomes the launch of this award toolkit by Carers Trust Scotland to help improve the support available to student carers at college; recognises the important unpaid caring responsibilities that student carers have for disabled family members or friends, or those with mental illness and/or addiction problem; notes that student carers are not always recognised by education professionals as undertaking a caring role; understands that three quarters of student carers are in further education and that research shows that student carers are four times more likely to drop out of further education than students who are not carers; appreciates that having unpaid caring responsibilities can have consequences for the positive destination options after study; understands that student carers can greatly benefit from dedicated support provision, and believes that appropriate policies and practices in the further education sector should be endorsed to ensure that student carers are better supported and have a fair chance to be successful in their own education and achieve their true potential in all aspects of their lives.
