Save our Scotch

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 22 January 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-10035

That the Parliament welcomes reports that 10 new distilleries are set to open in 2018 and 22 further projects are in the pipeline; acknowledges that this has the potential to create jobs across the sector; notes the concerns of the Scotch whisky industry workforce however, who consider that tens of thousands of jobs in the sector are at risk from the movement of production processes, including bottling and packaging overseas; understands that regulations exist to protect single malt to ensure that it is distilled, matured, bottled, labelled and packaged in Scotland, while the same requirements are not necessary for blended Scotch whisky, and welcomes and supports the aims of Unite the Union’s Save Our Scotch campaign to end the offshoring of such jobs, protect the quality of blended Scotch whisky and introduce a requirement that all production processes involved in producing Scotch whisky, including blended, must be carried out in Scotland.
