Tax Gap Fall

  • Submitted by: Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 27 October 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-08455

That the Parliament congratulates HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on reports that the so-called tax gap fell to a record low of 6% in 2015-16; understands that, if the gap had remained at the 2005-06 level of 7.9%, it would have grown to £46 billion, which would have made the UK nearly £12 billion poorer each year; believes that the fall follows the introduction of 75 measures taken by the UK Government to reduce tax avoidance, evasion and non-compliance, and understands that, as a result, HMRC has successfully accrued almost £160 billion in additional tax revenue since 2010.
