Arthritis Research UK and Aberdeen University Work Together to Improve Diagnosis Speeds

  • Submitted by: Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 17 August 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07157

That the Parliament recognises the research by the University of Aberdeen, funded by Arthritis Research UK, into improving the speed of diagnosis for patients with axial spondyloarthritis, which found that medications such as ibuprofen can hide the symptoms of the condition in MRI scans, resulting in delayed diagnosis or misdiagnoses; understands that, despite early diagnosis being critical for preventing the condition from worsening, many patients wait several years; considers that the study will help researchers better understand what proportion of patients with the condition are misdiagnosed and could lead to earlier commencement of appropriate treatment and improved patient outcomes; wishes the researchers well in continuing their study into this painful and debilitating condition, and calls on the Scottish Government to ensure the sustainability of funding for medical research in Scotland.
